Have you ever attended a public conference, workshop or perhaps an internet business seminar and left the event with a head full of great ideas and big plans to put them in place as soon as you get back to whatever type of business you are currently doing? Only to find that you just didn't have the ability to capture all that good information? Or other people you noticed at the seminar event seemed to be organised and had a some sort of system in gathering information and seemed to be so 'switched on' and attuned to the speakers' information.
Of course, you may be one of those in the latter category who have learned from attending many seminars/conferences, the following points are considered basic and logical information. For those who may be attending a seminar or conference for the first time, it can seem quite overwhelming and you can easily get caught up in just being part of the crowd, so here are three (3) key points that you might want to consider to take with you:
Tip #1 - The Stationery pack:
At least 2-3 pens, definitely a black pen, but red is useful for underlining topics A highlighter - great for simply highlighting key points in the speakers' notes (or your own!) Post-It notes - just as good as a highlighter especially if there is a page that you need to go back to quickly A mini stapler - not one of those big clunky things, but a small stapler - great for putting all speakers' notes together And of course a staple remover A small zipped bag or "pencil case" to put the above in. Hint: something you can easily rest on your lap, just in case you don't have a table to sit at. If you are sitting at a table, the area will generally be small so best not to 'own' the table with your stationery and you probably don't want people to assume that it was provided by the event organisers and participants feel free to take.
Tip #2 - Networking Pack: (no not internet network - human networking)
A business card is an absolute must - even if it has just your name and contact details. The amount of people you are bound to meet that can truly open doors and opportunity is not be overlooked - great business, joint ventures and long term friendships have often been formed by simply attending a Seminar!
Tip # 3 Technology Pack:
Generally mobile phones are requested to be switched off at the beginning of the workshop. If you are of course a seasoned IT professional and you simply can't do without your laptop/ipad/notebook etc., consider the following:
Make sure you're battery is fully charged - don't expect that you will have access to a power point in the room. Hint: If you are attending an overseas seminar/conference - make sure to take the right ac adaptor
Wireless Internet connection: useful if the content is related to internet business and if speaker directs to some internet sites, you can bookmark them in your favourites. Hint: if you are overseas you should probably purchase a local internet usb 'pay as you go' to save costs on global roaming.
Conclusion:
People learn in many different ways and a high percentage of adults learn by writing notes as either a memory jogger or just to interpret the information in their own words. In a way, it's a way of 'owning the information' and perceiving it in a way that makes sense. If you are a first-time participant at a Conference, Workshop or Seminar, Summit, you might find these tips useful. Having attended a number of events, conferences, lately these venues either don't provide paper or pen and because we rely heavily on technology, often a pen is not something people carry anymore. If the Seminar runs for a number of days, generally a workbook may be provided but you may find that there is little room for notes.
