Many small business owners have used the Chamber of Commerce as a CENTER OF INFLUENCE. What does the Center of influence mean? It means having a group of like-minded people who are connected / interconnected via a person, group, or association

How many small business owners are making money with the chamber of commerce?

Well heres a fact: We know that the Chamber of Commerce is helping people make money. Otherwise it would be a dead institution but trust me it is not. Its thriving in most areas.

Here is why?

The Chamber controls a large, active, and prosperous center of influence. The Chamber of Commerce is made up of business owners; company Presidents, CEOs, V.P.s, association presidents, and other movers and shakers. Because the Chamber cost a lot of money, it keeps out those who are unsuccessful because they cant afford the joining fee.

By charging this prequalifies its members and has consistently led to the local businesses and community leaders taking active part in the Chamber of Commerce over the years to get their monies worth.

I know it could be quite expensive joining the Chamber of Commerce but it gives you access to people that can grow your business.

I remember one client from London who had consistently used the Chamber of Commerce to secure corporate speaking engagements on her seminar titled Fitness at Work.

I recently joined a free networking group here in Luxembourg called The Business Lunch. It started less than a year ago starting the just 8 members. Now it has grown to over 61 people attending the lunch every month.

You dont really have to belong to a paid network to get result. You just need to go to those that are active. Members talk about their business, refer business to one another and give testimonial about each other services. Its growing pretty quickly and I wouldnt be shocked if it doesnt grow its member to the 100s it the next few months.

1. It doesnt matter what business you get into. Fortunes have been made and lost in just about every business you can think of. There are millionaires who made their money selling shoelaces. 6. Attend seminars. Even if you havent started a business yet attending a business seminar can be a very useful way to spend your time and money. Seminars can range from free to tens of thousands of dollars. Start with a free to a few hundred dollars. Dont let the price fool you. Ive attending some seminars that were less than $100 and gotten great value.

7. Start networking. If you havent started or bought your business yet dont be afraid to start networking, your local chamber of commerce is a great place to start. Dont be afraid to go up to people and start a conversation sometime when youre a new face it can be intimidating. Go and introduce yourself and ask a bunch of questions. People love to talk about themselves and their businesses. Use this to your advantage. Just please dont ask them for ideas for a business to start! Ask them questions about marketing, management, taxes, and the local marketplace. If you find one or two people who seem to be a wealth of knowledge ask if you can treat them to lunch sometime and pick their brain some more. One caution though. Beware that there are some people who will talk the talk but dont walk the walk. Also be wary of people who want you to invest your money with them. Ive seen some horror stories where people have been taken advantage of.

ACTUAL CASE HISTORY: Many of our friends, clients and colleagues have recently shared with us stories of recent college and grad school graduates unable to find jobs. Some grads who had job offers in hand have now had those job offers deferred, or even rescinded. Its not surprising, given the state of our economy. But it remains disturbing to see so many educated, eager and hopeful folks facing difficulty getting started in life.

What should a recent grad do? Are there many steps that an unemployed graduate can take to help him or herself? Are there any helpful hints anyone can offer them?

For many years we have counseled and represented employees seeking new employment. Over that time we have developed a seven-step method we teach our clients, and others at our seminars, to help them negotiate and navigate employment matters. We call that method the Quality Vs. Power Method (or QVP for short.) While the overall seven-step QVP Method was not intended to be used by first-time job seekers, its first step holds the key, we believe, to what grads without jobs should do.

What is that first step? It is to assess, and build, your Unique Human Capital (or UHC for short.) A persons Unique Human Capital is that set of attributes that make that person valuable to an employer, and uniquely so. Your UHC might be: (a) your ability to speak Mandarin Chinese; (b) your intimate knowledge of what drives the wholesale market for sugar; (c) the fact that the CEO of the companys biggest client was your best buddy from summer camp; (d) your natural ability as a saleswoman; (e) your fame as an organic chemist. Its something (or somethings) about you that make you stand out as a source of value to your interviewer.

We always counsel job seekers to consider what their Unique Human Capital is, and to develop, broaden and enhance it, in whatever way possible. We suggest they put together a list of their special knowledge, abilities, experiences, relations, fame, connections, resources and other attributes that make them special, unique, different and, most importantly, valuable, which means desirable and hirable to prospective employers. There are many things, but the most common are: experience, expertise and practical knowledge, all of which can be conveyed in a resume. Perhaps more than anyone, a grad without a job should spend at least some of his or her time gaining experience, expertise, understanding, familiarity with language, practical knowledge and yes even some of the tricks of the trade. This is what will get him or her a first job.

Although the press made fun of him and his plan, his coalition forces flew into rebel-controlled territory unarmed. The rebel surrounded them and searched the plane. They found it was full of guitars, volleyballs, medical equipment and other useful supplies, but no weapons. It also carried vehicles which were old and needed to be push-started, which the rebels then helped the NZDF soldiers do. News of their peaceful mission spread through the island quickly. The mission was considered a success, the rebels and Bougainvillle government forces agreed to work towards a peace which so far has prevailed.

Based on the three research studies I chose to analyze, I needed to study both test results and grades in order to prove or disprove a relationship between the given assessment and whether or not the student would do well in a specific class.

6. Chapter three is your "Methodology" chapter. Here you are going to breakdown the parts of your research project. What is your setting and population? What are your exact research questions? Are you going to interview people? Are you going to give them a test? If you are interviewing or testing, remember that you will have to get your school's Internal Reveiw Board (IRB) approval. The "Results" chapter is where you are going to need a good statistical program like the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) and unless you are a math major you are probably going to need the help of a statistician to understand and then explain your data. SPSS provides a lot of backup help, but the more complicated the analyses you need to run, the more complicated the data becomes. For example, to "predict" an outcome I had to use a process called logistical regression. That is not one of the basic types of analysis procedures usually taught in educational measurement classes. If you don't understand your data, or can't figure out which analysis to run, ask for help! This chapter will be the make or break point of your dissertation.

8. Your final chapter is the "Discussion" of your results with a final recommendation of additional research that should be completed on your topic. For example, in the discussion section of my dissertation, I questioned why the assessment instrument I compared to actual grade performance was being used as the major tool to promote or keep back students from entering high school--that made no sense. I recommended additional research on a much wider scale. Coincidentally, studies by both the Rand Corporation and the Chicago Consortium of School Research were published that same year and both studies supported my conjectures.

9. Your paper ends with "Appendices" (possibly a list of acronyms or a glossary of terms) and a "Reference List" (bibliography). This is where you need to follow the rules of citation to the letter. Most major universities today use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), but don't assume that yours does. A university may require the Modern Language Association (MLA)or the Turabian method developed years ago at the University of Chicago. Find out what your school uses and make the investment to buy the book. It will save you time at 2:00 a.m. when you're trying to make final edits.
