Sales Presentation Skills: Make More Effective Live and Video Presentations - Part 1 - Business - Presentation


Making a sales presentation, whether live or on video doesn't have to be the gut wrenching experience you may think. By following a few guidelines, you can develop the sales presentation skills necessary to make presentations that are powerful, focused, deliver your message and leave your audience believing that you are the definitive authority on your chosen subject.

Notice the word focused. I can't emphasize enough that to deliver an outstanding presentation you must be focused, almost laser-like from beginning to end. How many presentations have you heard, or seen where you started wishing the speaker would "get to the point already"? or, in the case of the internet, you click off what you thought was going to be a video chock full of useful information?

Sound familiar? Do the presentations and/or videos you make suffer from these common problems?

Typically, what this all boils down to is a lack of focus on the part of the presenter and the ability to stay focused on the subject material through out the presentation. This becomes particularly important if you are developing a video for the internet because you have very little time to establish your rapport with the viewer, and the length of your video is relatively short.

For the purpose of this writing I am going to talk about content...I realize that with video presentations all kinds of technical issues pop up. But lets face it. In the end it's all about content. We'll save technical aspects of video presentations for a later article.

Developing the sales presentation skills needed to make more effective presentations is not overly difficult, but will require a bit of work on your part. What I am going to do is lay out a format that you can follow that will allow you to focus on your issue(s), and stay focused on your issue(s), regardless if your presentation is 5 minutes or 50 minutes. No more putting together a couple of pages of random notes or cue cards and reading from them! This format has served me well and I know it will serve you well too!

In a nutshell the format is based on the rule of threes. That is, the presentation topic is divided and subdivided into three parts with previews, speaking points and recaps, (or summaries), at the end of each group of three in the main body of the presentation.. This makes it easy to present material, it makes it easy to comprehend material, it cuts down on questions, (or reinforces points in the case of a video presentation), and it lends itself very easily to any length of time you wish.

3. Tell 'Em What You Said

May seem crazy, but that's it! Well, it is a little more complicated, but describing it in this manner makes it easy to remember.

7-Step to Delivering Presentation with Credibility - Computers


1. Tell Why you're the Right Person for the Presentation Topic!At the beginning of the presentation, explain why you have the right to talk to them on the topic by highlighting relevant elements of your background: * If it's a technical topic and you were trained as an engineer, say so. * If you've been working in the related field for the last 5 years, say so. * If you've studied the subject in depth and interviewed experts, say so. * If you don't have direct but do have parallel experience, say something like: "when I was working in (this other field), I had considerable experience in (the topic) that I believe applies here..." 2. Demonstrate Understanding. Prove that you know what you're talking about by: * Quickly recapping the preparation you've done for the session. * Using the audience's language. Learn and use the terms your audience knows to facilitate understanding and demonstrate that you took time to prepare. Be careful with acronyms and jargon. * Acknowledge t hat there may be people in the room that know more than you do about some aspects of the matter at hand, but that your study gives you a good grasp of what needs to be done.

3. Give the Real Facts. Identify the source of the information you are using such as: * "the sales report in XXX journal/company for the month just ended shows..." * "the data from the field test conducted in XXX last month indicates..." * "the recent research survey of XXX customers in the Southwest concludes..." * clearly identify the origin of data used in charts and graphs. 4. Tell the Truth. Your audience will never really trust you if they catch you in a lie. Avoid the temptation to pretend to know the answer to a question and fake it. It's better say "I don't know" and find the answer from the group or commit to research the issue after the session. 5. Be Yourself. Trying to be someone you're not is almost as bad as telling a lie. It's also a lot more work. You can, however, take up a temporary role to illustrate your understanding of the views of others by using introductory phrases such as: * "If I was the parent of a teenage girl, I might be thinking...." * If we were walking in the shoes of the customer, we might..."

6. Doing what you say you will do. * If you say you're starting at 9:00 a.m. then start at 9:00 a.m.(be punctual). * If you promise frequent breaks, allow for frequent breaks. * If you say you're going to take all questions, do so. 7. Speak with Conviction and Enthusiasm. Say it like you mean it, and your audience will believe in your words. If you sound tentative, people will book you as "squishy" and question your commitment on the matter. * Rehearse with real people before presentation, and ask them to give you candid feedback. * Eye contact, body language is extremely important. 2. Talk to the people, not to the product.

For instance, if you are promoting vitamin supplements, a bad feature writer will only harp on the nutritious values and so on; as a result the buyer loses interest. A good copywriter on the other hand, will show how indispensable the product is to the buyer (e.g. "would you like to live longer?" etc.)

3. Have faith in your presented topic.

Never lose your cool in front of your potential buyers. If they don't buy, don't pester them; No one likes the feeling of being pushed; it's a natural form of psychological inertia. If you still feel nervous before your presentation, imagine your audience is a bunch of inanimate human-sized bananas instead. It is quite a powerful technique that I have learned, and it's effective.
