Initial Ideas about Research - Business


The analysis of teachers' narratives on their understandings of research showed that 4 out 18 teachers described research as a professional development activity.

For example, I go to the British Council regularly and read the recent issues of E LT journals. I attend seminars sponsored by publishing companies. Lecturers present research on different topics.

Some other teachers (5 out of 18) equated research with statistics or moths did not like math when I was a student so I'm not sure about research. It's numbers and statistics, and impossible to understand. Research is a term that frightens me. I know that it's useful but I can't deal with all the tests and numbers, etc. By the way, I haven't seen one single English teacher who told me about the research s/he has done.

For some teachers research meant solving classroom management problems: We have students in class who are 'entertaining themselves by watching and judging the teacher' just like they are watching TV at home, in this case maybe research can help me, but I don't know how to find this research.

As can be seen, in general teachers' statements revealed their awareness of the usefulness of research as well as their fear and lack of knowledge of the process. The analyses of teachers' journals revealed the ways teachers approached and solved different problems in their classes.

The research process, especially collecting their own data, seemed to have positive effects on teachers' perspectives towards research: After having done research myself, I think what I can claim about my classroom or my students is much more reliable because I have my own data which I collected with a questionnaire and classroom observations.

The role of a researcher was 'strange' for some teachers as they had thought a researcher would do more 'complex' and 'sophisticated' research; yet, they still seemed to benefit from this role: To me the most impressive aspect of research was that it combined two roles into one: the role of the teacher, who knows the real classroom atmosphere, and the role of the researcher, who suggests theories about teaching and learning.

Many teachers indicated that 'research led to an increased sense of professionalism', and focused particularly on how research raised their awareness to their own teaching practices: In the class I observed, some students had difficulties in grasping the teachers' expectations. They just sat back and stared at the teacher with blank eyes and when she started the activity, these students couldn't do anything.

I realized that when you give instructions for an activity you're doing for the first time, you should pay particular attention to slow learners.

Reflecting on their own data encouraged some teachers to initiate changes in their teaching practices: Today I interviewed 9 students during lunch break.

I told them that I wanted to learn their opinions. They don't like the topics and activities in our pack. I realized I should find more interesting topics for them.... I copied two articles on Turkey's membership to EU from the 'Daily News' for all students and we had silent reading. After going over the key words, they made groups and started discussing the articles with access to the articles and key words. It really went much better.

Social Activities For Seniors - Here Are a Few Ideas - Health - Wellness


The social life of seniors tend to slow down when they reach sixty-five to seventy years. It's important to give them enough social activities to maintain a good sense of confidence and identity. In most cases, older people want to live with others who also belong in the same age group. Here are some of the tried and proven ways to make them healthy.

Good Old Group Gatherings

Class reunions are a great way for older people to mix & communicate with other people. Collections may stem from the church, a lifestyle seminar or any hobby for that matter. I always remember how much I loved the stories my grandmother told me. I dreamt about them, imagined things and then asked her numerous questions. I still don't quite get how she had the patience to listen me out. So, get your elders involved in talking, they love it and they have so many anecdotes to share, it's amazing and fun.

Getting a Buddy

Some people aren't as sociable as others, & usually just keep to themselves even when the activities are introduced. A good method is to sit down & listen to the person in a one-on-one conversation session. Ask open questions & encourage the individual feelings & to share other details. You may also find the person a pen & paper to draw or write. Some people want others to know about their history only through pics & words.

IMPROVE WORK/LIFE BALANCE

* Schedule 30 minutes at the end of your day to outline the next day's activities. Close your door, turn off the phone, play soft music and schedule. * Schedule one time management training seminar in the first quarter. * Follow the 15, 15, and 15 rule. Buy a timer and dedicate only 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes at lunch, and/or 15 minutes in the late afternoon to email, texting, and social media updates. When the buzzer or time runs out, move onto something else. * Work 40 hours a week and negotiate a flexible schedule with your boss. If you are planning on working 14 hours a day for three days straight at a conference, ask your boss for 2 days off upon your return. * Earn your Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation. * Earn your Certificate in Meeting Management (CMM) designation. * Schedule a 30 minute meeting with your boss or take him or her out to lunch. Ask them how you can advance your career. Write down their ideas and follow them. Ask if you can be cross-trained in other areas or learn new technologies. * Obtain a mentor in the company. * Be positive and open to new ideas, always. Join Your Local Chamber of Commerce- Bad Idea or Not - Business - Networking


Now before you tune me out and disregard this idea stick with me and Ill tell you how you can use it consistently to generate consistent business flow. I remember a few months ago, I wrote an article on Networking with Your Key Target Audience. It got a lot of buzz. Check it out and grab some cool tips on networking effectively.

Many small business owners have used the Chamber of Commerce as a CENTER OF INFLUENCE. What does the Center of influence mean? It means having a group of like-minded people who are connected / interconnected via a person, group, or association

How many small business owners are making money with the chamber of commerce?

Well heres a fact: We know that the Chamber of Commerce is helping people make money. Otherwise it would be a dead institution but trust me it is not. Its thriving in most areas.

Here is why?

The Chamber controls a large, active, and prosperous center of influence. The Chamber of Commerce is made up of business owners; company Presidents, CEOs, V.P.s, association presidents, and other movers and shakers. Because the Chamber cost a lot of money, it keeps out those who are unsuccessful because they cant afford the joining fee.

By charging this prequalifies its members and has consistently led to the local businesses and community leaders taking active part in the Chamber of Commerce over the years to get their monies worth.

I know it could be quite expensive joining the Chamber of Commerce but it gives you access to people that can grow your business.

I remember one client from London who had consistently used the Chamber of Commerce to secure corporate speaking engagements on her seminar titled Fitness at Work.

After a few years of frequenting the Chamber socials and networking meetings, she had secured half dozen companies who formally endorsed this bootcamps to all its employees! One Chamber meeting resulted in the towns largest employer including her flyer as a statement stuffer in their employees pay checks and they did it for free. Her flyer said, Special Offer to XYZ Corporation Employees: Free 1 Week Bootcamp, normally 149, when you bring this coupon. It resulted in 30+ new patients and she said theyre still bringing them in. She would not have grown her practice, if she had not joined the Chamber of Commerce.

How to Get Your Monies Worth

The key is being active. Its not a place to show up with your hand out, attend two meetings, and then whine you havent gotten clients. Its about relationship building and that can take time.

Offer to speak at meetings on topics of interest to business leaders. Giving a short educational speech in front of these business leaders is a great way to become known as a Player very quickly.

Heres what another small business owner did to grow her fitness bootcamp:

She attended the networking meetings and socials sponsored by the Chamber. She did this for about 3 months and then offered to sponsor a dinner for Chamber members to raise money for charity. As the leader / organizer, she was able to meet many people; they saw her as a local community leader, and have resulted in a booming business.

She got her name/photo in the paper and built community equity through her efforts. She found that the leaders who made up the Chamber took notice and started referring her fitness bootcamp. Give consideration to joining your local Chamber of Commerce.

Just be aware that some Chambers are more active than others, so if yours is stale it might NOT be a good idea. Ask around

I recently joined a free networking group here in Luxembourg called The Business Lunch. It started less than a year ago starting the just 8 members. Now it has grown to over 61 people attending the lunch every month.

You dont really have to belong to a paid network to get result. You just need to go to those that are active. Members talk about their business, refer business to one another and give testimonial about each other services. Its growing pretty quickly and I wouldnt be shocked if it doesnt grow its member to the 100s it the next few months.

If there is nothing in your area thats not giving you the result you are your potential audience need. Create one yourself.
