Social media guru Adam Gray speaks at the ISMM?s Business Success Seminars - Business - Sales

Adam Gray, the social media specialist, will be giving keynote presentation at two of this autumn's Business Success Seminars, organised by the Institute of Sales & Marketing Management (ISMM). The seminars take place in Swindon on 27th October and in Southampton on 10th November.

According to Gray, who advises organisations on their social media strategy, the messages delivered through TV and magazine advertising, junk mail, telesales and every other marketing channel have led sales prospects to run away.

"They now hide behind spam filters, voicemail and gatekeepers so they are all but unreachable via our 'unique' offerings," he explained. "Even if we do get through to them, they won't be paying attention.

"However," he continued, "instead of you selling, it could be them buying. Instead of you shouting to be heard, it could be them listening."

At the seminars in Swindon and Southampton, Gray will be explaining why things have changed, how things have changed and how to harness the power of social media to give you the business advantage that you need.

"In particular, I'll be outlining five things that you need to do - today - in order to start to harness the power of social media," he said.

"Some people are already doing well at 'social media'. For them, my talk should be reassuring.

"Others are doing social media half-heartedly. I hope my presentation will motivate these people to move forwards with what they're doing.

"But those who are not doing social media - even avoiding it - need to be encouraged to dip their toes in the social media ocean."

Also presenting at these seminars is goal mapping expert Brian Mayne. Among other things, he will be explaining how to set goals that really work; suggesting ways to condition your subconscious to enable you to succeed; outlining the 'creative cycle', and exploring why lateral leadership is the key to driving innovation.

Organised by the ISMM - the UK's association for sales professionals - the seminars are part of a series of Business Success Seminars being held at various venues around the country from September to December. Each seminar begins at 6.15pm with a networking session - with refreshments. The presentations follow, leaving time for more business networking from 8.30pm to 9pm.

The seminars, which are sponsored by Ellis Salsby and De Vere, aims to provide thought-provoking ideas and practical insights for maximising sales and winning new business.

Delegate places are free for ISMM members. Those who are not members of the ISMM but who would like to attend the seminar should contact June Kelly on 01582 840001.

Places must be pre-booked via the ISMM website, at: /events_book.php

The Tyranny of the ?Good Idea.? - Business

Occasionally I am called in as a consultant to discuss a "good idea" with an organization's leadership. After listening to the good idea, I am asked to give my opinion as to whether this is something the organization should pursue. While I am glad to participate in this type of exercise, it is usually not a productive one. If the folks in the organization would only review the purpose of the organization and the leader, the decision would be obvious to them.

If they would ask if the idea fits the purpose of the organization, they would have their answer. If it doesn't fit, then ignore it or give it to some other organization, even if it could be the next replacement to the microwave oven. If you want your company to be the one to create the replacement for the microwave oven, then start a new organization, but don't confuse the purpose of your first organization.

There are a million good ideas floating around. Sadly, some ideas are rejected before anyonecan evaluate the potential of the idea to see how it fits the organization. While there are many failed ideas, there are also a few incredible successes such as Federal Express, in which a good idea took quite a while to become a reality. We see this same relevance to purpose and focus in organizations that try to diversify.

When companies diversify along the lines in which they have already been successful, the organization obviously has a greater chance of success. For example, if a fast food company diversified into making movies, the probability of success would be quite low since the success factors are quite different. However, it seems logical that if a fast food company diversified into a 10-minute oil change business, the probability of success would be high, since the same success factors of advertising, location, operations, customer throughput, etc., are the same. The holding company of both the fast food company and the oil change company would have a purpose that was common and overarching to both firms.

Now let's take a look at what this Beatitude means to be undefiled in thought. The leader who is pure in heart would never over react to seeing a 60-Minutes camera crew waiting outside the office. If you only think of good things, then you will only do good things, except for the occasional mistake, and mistakes do happen. It is not the mistake itself that gets some people into trouble, but the cover up of the mistake. If you only think good things, then you'll think enough to own up to the mistake and it won't need to be covered up. Is this a Pollyanna view? Perhaps just a little, given the number of people whose behavior is the opposite of this Beatitude. But,

I have observed this kind of honesty at work. I have shared these lessons from The Beatitudes with many groups of people. In one of these seminars, I asked people to tell me if they worked for a boss who represented the characteristics of The Beatitudes. Usually, I find that one or two people out of twenty-five work for someone who portrays three of the Beatitudes. But it is rare to find employees who recognize more than three of the Beatitudes in their leader. In this seminar, as we discussed each Beatitude, I found two people who truly believed that their boss lived out each Beatitude. Curious about this, I asked if I could meet their boss. A month or so later, I received an invitation to present the seminar, "Be a Leader for God's Sake," to the department where this agapao leader worked.

When I arrived, I met this leader and was convinced after a few minutes, that he probably did live up to all of the Beatitudes. This particular department provided a service to the organization (anonymity is kept here as a courtesy to the people involved) that was known in the industry to be a high-turnover, high-stress type of profession. Yet, I found out that most of the people in this department had been with the department for over five years and that twenty percent had been there at least ten years. These numbers reflected astounding staying power in an industry that averaged less than one year.

During and after this same seminar, I asked if these employees' leader had ever made mistakes. The answer was an overwhelming "yes" followed by, "but we love him anyway." In probing this response, I learned that this leader did, in fact, make mistakes. Lots of them! But, because his heart was so pure, his employees always knew that he never meant to harm anyone, and usually the leader discovered the mistake before anyone else did, and he announced it himself. The employees commented that they had learned what their leader's weak spots were and where he usually made mistakes. So they just made sure that someone else did those activities, thus improving the success rate of the leader. This does not mean that the leader was inept -- he was far from it!

When your motives are obvious to everyone, people don't suspect you of doing wrong. When you know that your motives are pure, you can engage in more activities with a more relaxed approach, thus reducing stress and accomplishing more.

What Is The Value Of One Really Good Idea? - Business - Small Business

Obviously it depends on the idea. But I will give you one good example. And it is wrapped up in a story. You can judge for yourself what it, or something very much like it, could be worth to you and your business.

Several years ago I had a business relationship with one of the best known marketing strategists in the world. We had been working on something for some considerable period of time, when a dramatic change in the external environment convinced us that we needed a course correction. He was then in the middle of producing a several day seminar/workshop for a selected number of his business owner clients.

This was something that he usually did once or twice each year, although he had not been quite as diligent in the previous 18 months. And attendees from his client list were self selecting based on their willingness to pay between $5,000 and $20,000 for events lasting from two days to five days.

He insisted that I attend as his guest. Each day began quite early, and meals were included, so everyone was a breakfast. In fact the hotel hosting the event provided a special dining room for the exclusive use of seminar attendees. Determined to use my time as productively as possible, I made a point of sitting with different people for each meal. The mealtime conversations were interesting and wide ranging.

About half the mealtime conversation focused on lessons learned so far from the excellent presenters, and from other seminar participants. With particular emphasis on whether and how a particular concept would apply to the businesses owned by the various attendees. The rest of the time was spent on the normal conversation that forms part of most meals, where several people are seated together.

I found it all quite fascinating. During this time it was easy to ask people whether this was their first of such events, or whether they were repeat attendees. What seemed to me then to be an amazing number had attended more than one such event previously. Sort of repeat offenders. It was also both fascinating and instructive to learn what each attendee had learned to that point, And how he planned to apply it to his own business upon his return.

The numbers of different industries represented was surprisingly large. And not surprising in a gathering like this, there were types of businesses that I didn't even know existed. So I made a point of determining the business that each of my table mates was involved in.

One particularly enthusiastic fellow revealed that he was seeking a new business opportunity. He believed that being with this group would provide him with some new ideas on what he might do. He was a repeat attendee, and expressed almost unqualified enthusiasm for previous events.

Seeking to uncover the nature of the qualification he placed on his enthusiasm, I pursued the subject energetically. It seemed that the root of his slight hesitation resulted from the fact that he got too many ideas, rather than too few. So he didn't really feel shortchanged or cheated. The fact that there was a repetitive nature to some of the content in each event didn't seem to bother him. Rather than subject himself to any more of my questioning, he opted to tell me his story.

He had recently sold his business. As he was preparing his business for sale, something that took him some considerable time, he attended one of these events. He decided to implement one of the ideas that he took home with him, in order to increase the value of the business. The idea implemented increased revenue and profit, and made the business easier to operate. Making it appeal to a wider audience.

He stated that implementing this single concept added over $600,000 to the value of his business. When I observed that an extra $600,000 paid for a lot of these kinds of events he agreed. Then I finally learned what had slightly dampened his enthusiasm. Apparently he had actually identified three actionable concepts for his business at the event in question. But only implemented one of them. He could never stop wondering how much more his business could have sold for had he implemented all three.

I don't know whether his glass was half full or half empty. But I have never before had first hand experience with someone so able to correctly identify what a single good idea was worth to him. All he had to do was implement it.
