Social Activities For Seniors - Here Are a Few Ideas - Health - Wellness

The social life of seniors tend to slow down when they reach sixty-five to seventy years. It's important to give them enough social activities to maintain a good sense of confidence and identity. In most cases, older people want to live with others who also belong in the same age group. Here are some of the tried and proven ways to make them healthy.

Good Old Group Gatherings

Class reunions are a great way for older people to mix & communicate with other people. Collections may stem from the church, a lifestyle seminar or any hobby for that matter. There are several organizations & agencies that meet up every now & then specifically to meet the social needs of older people. In a typical meeting, there may be five to thirty participants. A coach or manager organizing the programme in a way that seniors can talk about their current situation, feelings & other concerns.

Gathering is usually held in a hall or outdoors where older people can enjoy nature & tranquility. The Agenda may include 1 or more subjects. Some of the most ideal seminars to attend include self-care, independence & rehabilitation activities for seniors. A session can last anywhere from one hour to a full weekend.

Explore the world of the Internet

Today you will find a lot of seniors on the Internet. When I was searching for good blogs to read, I noticed a few well written ones and guess what they were by seniors. They are totally fun to read and spend time on. I would suggest you get them a computer and let them explore for themselves. Let them meet different people via forums and chat rooms.

Initially, the seniors need assistance on how to operate the computer & connect to the Internet. Teach them the basics, such as proper use of search engines. Don't forget to mention safety tips, such as controlling the ability of a website & looking for any unscrupulous people who are out to their credit card numbers & money.

Get them involved in Sports

Golf, fishing, walking are very good activities for seniors. Swimming is also a good activity. Some of them are fit and active enough to participate in activities like basketball, tennis. My grandparents loved board games, card games, chess, and we loved hanging around them as kids.

Storytelling

I always remember how much I loved the stories my grandmother told me. I dreamt about them, imagined things and then asked her numerous questions. I still don't quite get how she had the patience to listen me out. So, get your elders involved in talking, they love it and they have so many anecdotes to share, it's amazing and fun.

Getting a Buddy

Some people aren't as sociable as others, & usually just keep to themselves even when the activities are introduced. A good method is to sit down & listen to the person in a one-on-one conversation session. Ask open questions & encourage the individual feelings & to share other details. You may also find the person a pen & paper to draw or write. Some people want others to know about their history only through pics & words.

A Special Gift For Your Loved One

It is impossible to be with your parents or other elders all the time. Senior Alert Systems allow seniors to stay at home alone and experience the freedom and independence they deserve. Medical Alert systems do not have to be used only if you have health issues, they can be used in case of emergencies. In an emergency just click the button on the pendant and help will be on it's way.

These Medical Alert Systems come with a 2 way voice communication, which means, someone on the other end will speak with the patient, reassure them and if required call local law enforcement agencies.
